Dutch international Matthijs de Ligt has revealed why he was never close to joining Chelsea last summer.

“Yes, but that wasn’t to do with me,” Matthijs de Ligt told the Evening Standard. “I had my sights on Bayern.

“It wasn’t close with me but maybe [it was between] the clubs [Chelsea and Juventus]. Honestly, I didn’t speak to them this summer. There were a lot of rumours that didn’t come from me.”

De Ligt was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea last summer but instead joined German club Bayern Munich.
