Breaking: Chelsea reach breakthrough in talks over deal for international midfielder

Chelsea have reached a breakthrough in talks over a deal for midfielder Mason Mount, according to The Athletic.

Mount’s current contract expires in the summer of 2024 and the Blues have been keen on extending the contract of the England international.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and co-owner Behdad Eghbali held talks with Mount’s representatives in the past few weeks and a positive breakthrough has been made.

While there are still some details left to finalise, this is the closest Chelsea and Mount have reached over a new deal since talks began.

One of the reasons for the delay in Chelsea reaching a new contract with Mount is the length of contract. The Blues offered Mount a seven year contract which was rejected by the Chelsea midfielder.

Another stumbling block has been the size of Mount’s salary. The England international wants to be among the biggest earners at the club after being named back-to-back Chelsea Player of the Year. He has also been picked consistently by previous managers Frank Lampard and Tuchel.

However, the new owners are trying to offer players more incentivised contracts. This means giving a decent base salary but with the ability to earn a lot more depending on individual and team achievements.

    Chelsea should sort out with Luise Enrique so that he could take over after the world cup. Retain and buy the best players without a manager is pure foolishness.
