Chelsea centre-back Malang Sarr isn’t having the best of time on loan with Monaco.

Sarr joined Monaco on a season-long loan deal, and the French club have an obligation to buy the centre-half at €15 million at the end of the season.

Sarr joined Chelsea from Nice as a free agent in the summer of 2020 before heading out on loan to Porto.

The 23-year-old was used at times by Thomas Tuchel as a left centre-back and even as a left-back on occasions, and he played 21 games in all competitions in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

However, his loan spell at Monaco hasn’t been smooth sailing.

Sarr has featured in eight matches for Philippe Clement’s side this season, starting on just five occasions for the Ligue 1 side. But the team’s defensive record whenever he’s on the pitch has been very poor.

Despite five of his outings for the club being for 45 minutes or less, only twice when he has been on the field have Monaco avoided conceding.

In a recent game with Angers, which ended in a 2-0 victory, Sarr was given a rare start, but although his side did keep a clean sheet, he was so poor in the first half that he was withdrawn at half-time.

His performance was given a rating of 2/10 by L’Equipe, as the paper went on to explain: “Messed up a pass from Ismael Jakobs after 16 minutes, close to costing his side a penalty against Adrien Hunou because of a technical error (18 minutes), clumsy and booked in the 25th minute, he failed in almost all of the meagre work he had to do. Replaced at the break by Vanderson, who created the first Monegasque goal.”

In matches when Sarr has been drafted in as a late replacement to try to keep things tight at the back, Monaco end up conceding most times.

When he has been on the field this season, Monaco have conceded 10 goals and scored only four.

The French media now claim that Sarr is the worst loan player of the season.
