Chelsea were strongly linked with a move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez during the summer transfer window.

Chelsea saw a bid of £45m rejected by Ajax on transfer deadline, before sealing a deal for Denis Zakaria.

However, Dutch legend Wesley Sneijder has said that the player is not worth the hype.

According to Sneijder, Ajax should have ripped Chelsea off by taking the money, claiming that the Mexican only passes the ball backwards and sideways.

“Edson Alvarez plays every ball backwards or sideways, he’s of no use,” the former attacking midfielder told Voetbal International.

“They [Ajax] should have taken him to London quickly. You could have signed two good players for that [amount of money Chelsea offered in the summer].”
