Real Madrid goalkeeper and former Blue Thibaut Courtois has been named the goalkeeper of the year as he won the 2022 Yashin Trophy.
In Monday’s ceremony for the Ballon d’Or, Courtois was honoured with the award following his exploits last season, as Real Madrid went on to win the Champions League and La Liga.
A shortlist of ten goalkeepers made the cut for their performances in the 2021-22 season.
The list included Hugo Lloris of Tottenham, Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy, Ederson of Manchester City and Liverpool’s Alisson Becker.
Courtois won the award, Alisson came in second, Ederson third, Mendy fourth and AC Milan’s Serie A winner Mike Maignan completed the top five.
Mendy meanwhile hasn’t fared well this season, and face a huge battle to win his place as Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper, as Kepa Arrizabalaga has been in top form for Chelsea under Graham Potter.
