Former Aston Villa striker, Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Trent Alexander-Arnold to quit the England national team, following the treatment he has received from Gareth Southgate lately.
A lot has been made of Alexander-Arnold’s lack of involvement for England, with head coach Gareth Southgate preferring Reece James and Kyle Walker.
The 23-year-old was an unused substitute during England’s 1-0 defeat to Italy, and was completely dropped for Monday’s 3-3 draw against Germany, while Reece James featured in both games.
Southgate also recently suggested that Kieran Trippier was a more complete player than Alexander-Arnold.
Former Aston Villa winger Gabriel Agbonlahor has given his take on the matter. Agbonlahor admitted that James and Walker are indeed better than Alexander-Arnold, but not Trippier.
Speaking recently to talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said, “If I was Trent, I would retire from international duty if I don’t go to the World Cup.
“What’s the point of going away on these international breaks when you can stay with your club, rest and prepare yourself for Liverpool.
“We’ve seen players in the past retiring from England in the past because they weren’t getting the opportunities. It wouldn’t surprise me if he did.
“For (Gareth) Southgate to come out and say (Kieran) Trippier is a better all round player than Trent is an insult.
“I do like Trippier but Trent is an all-round better player.
“(Kyle) Walker and (Reece) James for me are better but not Trippier. The joke’s over Gareth.”
