Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has claimed that Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is not world class, and is in fact at ‘Championship level’ when it comes to defending.
Alexander-Arnold has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks, following a string of poor displays for Liverpool.
The Liverpool right-back has often been criticised for his defensive frailties, but with Liverpool struggling on all fronts this season, the spotlight on the England international appears to have increased.
Alexander-Arnold was benched for England’s UEFA Nations League defeat to Italy last Thursday, and dropped from the squad to face Germany.
While Gareth Southgate has been slammed by some for his failure to play Trent Alexander-Arnold, Leboeuf believes the Liverpool right-back lacks defensive quality.
The former Chelsea defender told Journal du Dimanche, “Look at Trent Alexander-Arnold. I love the guy, his offensive qualities. But defensively, he’s Championship level.
“Only Klopp’s system works for him. When it doesn’t work as well as it has this season, all you see is his defensive shortcomings.
“I want to take him with me to work on the basics. I would say to him: ‘Turn your head and look behind you, it will be better already’. It was Roberto Carlos who deformed generations of defenders.”
Chelsea right-back Reece James is now ahead of Alexander-Arnold in the England set-up.
