Chelsea were in need of an extra midfielder before the close of the summer transfer window.
The Blues were linked with a number of targets and ended up signing Denis Zakaria from Juventus on transfer deadline day.
Liverpool were also in sudden need of a midfielder during the closing stages of the transfer window, after unexpected injuries to Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson.
Zakaria has now revealed that he wasn’t aware of Chelsea’s interest until very late in the window.
According to the Chelsea loanee, Liverpool also wanted to sign him.
The Switzerland international, while chatting with Blick recently, revealed that he had no idea he was going to join the Blues until 6 hours before the close of the transfer window.
He also said he heard from his agent that Liverpool were interested in his services, although he’d already agreed to join Chelsea.
He said, “It all happened very quickly. I didn’t know a move to Chelsea was possible until six hours before the end of the transfer window. I packed my things and waited for the contract to be signed. I then did the medical check in Turin and it went through. It was very close.”
As for the interest from Liverpool, he added: “I heard that from my agent, but in the end it was Chelsea, and I think I’ll be happier in England than in Turin.”
