Graham Potter named a different looking formation, that had a backline of Reece James, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Marc Cucurella.
Before the game, Potter was asked by BT Sport if it was his plan to start with a back four, to which he responded: “Could be, could be.”
The likes of Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly, who were key players for Thomas Tuchel were on the bench for this game.
Explaining his selection, the former Brighton boss said: “We’ve gone for good experience, good know-how of the Champions League and this football club.
“I won’t give too much away, you can keep guessing.
“We’ve been working for a few days, hopefully looking to use the strengths and the qualities of the players
“The response has been fantastic from the boys and we’re looking forward to the game.”
It was indeed a very strong bench for Potter against Salzburg, with the likes of Fofana, Koulibaly, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Armando Broja, Ben Chiwell, Conor Gallagher and Hakim Ziyech all on the bench.
Potter would bring on Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic in the second-half.
