Chelsea splashed £97.5m to sign Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan last year.
Despite the Belgian being the club’s record signing, he wasn’t Thomas Tuchel’s choice for a striker, and after an early season form last year, the striker and manager never really got along.
Tuchel had claimed that he wanted to give Lukaku another opportunity this season, but Lukaku insisted on a move to Inter Milan rather than spend another season playing under Thomas Tuchel’s system that never favoured him.
Now that Tuchel has been dismissed, it raises the possibility of the striker being part of Chelsea’s future plans once again.
Lukaku is currently on loan with Inter and the deal doesn’t include any obligation to make the loan deal permanent.
Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta has admitted he doesn’t know what the future will hold for Lukaku following the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel.
“It’s fresh news. I don’t know what the effects will be,” Marotta told Sky Italia while reacting to Tuchel’s sacking.
“We absolutely want to get the best contribution out of Lukaku, and then at the end of the season we’ll sit down and discuss him with Chelsea.
“I don’t know if a change of coaches means that his return is to be automatic, it’s difficult to predict today.”
Lukaku has scored once on his return to Inter this term, but has missed their last two games through injury.
