Just before transfer deadline day, Chelsea became linked with some midfielders.

The Blues had made moves for defenders and forwards, but it was until late in the transfer window that Chelsea started pushing for a new midfielder.

Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has confirmed that Chelsea made a late bid to sign Edson Alvarez before transfer deadline day.

Chelsea had an offer of over £40m rejected for the Mexican midfielder, and Chelsea turned on to sign Denis Zakaria from Juventus.

He said: “Chelsea reported themselves for Edson Álvarez on the final day and Álvarez wanted this.

“For one day he was feeling very down but yesterday he told me: ‘coach, I am here and I will give my 100% again.’”

According to reports, Chelsea would go back for Alvarez in the January transfer window.
