Chelsea striker Armando Broja impressed on loan last season with Southampton.
The 20-year-old academy graduate attracted interest from the likes of Southampton, Newcastle and West Ham this summer, but Chelsea opted to keep him.
Thomas Tuchel has sent a warning out to the striker that he has to prove himself this season at Chelsea, and he must take advantage of every opportunity given to him.
Asked whether Broja could be his number nine this season, Tuchel told a press conference: “Yes and no. We know enough about him but it’s one thing to perform on a loan and another to perform at a club like Chelsea.
“He was injured in pre-season and now injured again, this does not help us have a clear view on what he can give us. I think it’s a huge chance for Armando to have an impact at Chelsea.”
West Ham were believed to be closing in on a £30m signing of Broja last month, and former Blue Glen Johnson warned Chelsea that they may be selling a great striker if they go on to sell the Albanian international.
“I think, because of the scenario, they’ll regret letting Broja go because they’re not selling him for huge, huge money,” Johnson explained to The Games Cabin.
“They’re letting a potentially great player go without allowing another club to break the bank. You’re not going to buy a player for the same amount of money for similar or better quality.
“You might as well keep him and work with what you’ve got. If you’re going to go for a renowned goalscorer now, it’s going to cost X amount of money.
“You’re not going to get him for £30 million are you? They’re better to work with what they’ve got rather than selling him for relatively cheap.
“I’m not totally convinced Broja can become an excellent Premier League goalscorer but he is good in front of goal and he can certainly finish,” Johnson added.
