Chelsea have already splashed a massive fee on the signings of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella.
However, Chelsea aren’t done in the transfer market. The Blues have been linked with a number signings, with the likes of Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang still being linked with a move to Chelsea.
Explaining why Chelsea need to sign that many players, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has said that it’s important to have a squad depth that can help the team compete on all fronts.
“I believe we can compete with this group, but it’s one thing to compete once a week and it’s another to compete 60 times a year and three times a week,” Tuchel said.
“You need to have players who challenge for their place and challenge for their minutes. It does not come down only to tactics and team spirit, it’s also about the depth in the squad and the challenge.”
Beside the incoming signings, Chelsea have also decided to retain last season’s loanees Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher.
One of Chelsea’ major problems last season was a lack of squad depth. Injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell hampered Chelsea’s title charge last season. And Tuchel is aiming to avoid that this season.
