Chelsea were reportedly close to signing Jules Kounde last summer, but the Blues pulled out of the deal after Sevilla had upped their price for the Frenchman.

Chelsea again went in for Kounde this summer, and while it seemed like the deal was getting close to being confirmed, Barcelona hijacked Chelsea’s move.

But where did Chelsea get it wrong in the deal for Jules Kounde?

According to The Athletic, Kounde was upset at Chelsea’s interest going cold this summer.

The Blues had been linked with multiple defenders, ranging from Kalidou Koulibaly, Matthijs de Ligt and Nathan Ake.

It was after a failed move for Ake, that Chelsea got back all in for Kounde, which made the defender upset, seeing that he was rated as a third option by Chelsea.

Barcelona, however, told Kounde that he was Xavi’s first choice. And Xavi also spoke to the 23-year-old, which helped him make the decision to join the Catalans rather than Chelsea.

It’s now official; Kounde is a Barcelona player, and Chelsea must turn attention elsewhere.
