Chelsea spent £97.5m to sign up Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan last summer.

The club record signing was expected to be the missing piece of a Chelsea team that had just won the Champions League.

However, Lukaku brought more questions than answers after scoring 8 Premier League goals all season.

The Belgian international has now sealed a return to Inter Milan, where he’s expected to spend the rest of the 2022-23 season on loan.

However, Inter Milan didn’t include a buyback option in the loan deal – meaning Lukaku will return to Chelsea at the end of the season.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was asked on the possibility of Lukaku returning to Chelsea, to which Tuchel admitted there is a possibility but refused to get drawn on how likely it is.

“We decided together with the owners that we’d let him go,” said the German.

“It was his wish to go, he had the possibility, we let him go.

“We brought now Raheem Sterling, which gives us a lot of flexibility, a lot of mobility, a lot of attacking options at the front, even if we don’t recruit more players.

“Given the fact he’s just on loan, of course there’s a chance.

“I don’t know if it’s very likely, but it’s not on me to give an outlook on that. There is a chance for it.”
