Chelsea need to strengthen the team’s defence this summer.
Of all the positions, it’s the central defence that needs the most work in the Chelsea team.
With the departure of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, and also considering the age of Thiago Silva, the backline seems pretty lightweight at the moment.
Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta may also leave the club this summer – leaving Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva as the preferred centre-backs from last season’s main squad.
Young Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has been tipped to remain at the club ahead of the new season.
The 19-year-old centre-back is highly rated at the club, and did well on loan with Huddersfield last season.
Hailed as the next John Terry, Chelsea news reporter Vince, has revealed that the teenager will stay back at the club rather than go on another loan spell.
He tweeted: “Chelsea plan to keep Colwill in the squad. If he leaves, it’s because he wants to leave not because Chelsea didn’t created space for him.
“He has pre-season to make a statement that he deserves to start. However, if he plays 40% games by the end of the season, that’s a huge win.”
Meanwhile, Levi Colwill had admitted that he’s keen on staying back at Chelsea ahead of next season.
“There’s too much respect for me to close the door (on potential Huddersfield Town return next season),” Colwill told the Yorkshire Post ahead Huddersfield’s play-off final last season.
“We need to get promotion first, which is the only thing I’m thinking of right now.
“I’m not planning for next year, all I can focus on right now is Wembley on Sunday and then the internationals after that. After when I’ve finished all of that, well that’s when I’ll start thinking about that.
“For me, playing for Chelsea will always be the main aim right now because it’s my club. But if that doesn’t happen, well then I have to find other ways to progress and become the player I want to be.”
