Cesc Fabregas left Chelsea for Monaco last week and he has linked up with former Arsenal team-mate turned manager Thierry Henry in the French league.

Fabregas’ departure has left a void in the Chelsea team, and it’s one that Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has complained that he’s unhappy about.

Sarri insisted that he didn’t want Fabregas to leave the club before his departure and after Chelsea battled to a 2-1 win over Newcastle, Sarri appealed again to the club to make signings, admitting that he needs a backup for Jorginho who has been struggling in recent weeks.

“Today Jorginho was in trouble and on the bench there wasn’t a player for that position,” Sarri said after the game.

“I need an option for Jorginho.”

Chelsea have been linked with Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella and Zenit St Petersburg’s Leandro Paredes as direct replacements for Fabregas.

Reports claim Cagliari want as much as £45million for the 21-year-old Barella, while the more experienced Paredes would cost around £30m.

Sarri was asked about the duo, and he said: “I have no idea.

“It’s not too much [of a worry for me]. [If] the club is worried, I don’t know.

“The club knows very well my opinion. I need the player there [in that position]. It depends on the club decision, I think. I cannot do anything more.”

Sarri has now further explained what he meant by Jorginho being in trouble against Newcastle.

“After 20 minutes he [Jorginho] lost a lot of balls and it is unusual,” Sarri analysed.

“So I think he was in trouble. Maybe he was tired, I don’t know, but if Fabregas was on the bench I think in the second half Fabregas would have been on the pitch instead of Jorginho.”

Sarri also revealed that Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu has the potential to play in that role. Ampadu who’s yet to feature in the Premier League this season can play as a centre-back and central midfielder, and Sarri believes the youngster can serve as a replacement for Fabregas.

“In the future maybe but we have to work,” Sarri pointed out. “The player who plays in that position usually touches about 120 to 130 balls [a match] and so I think we need a specialist there.

“The bench is not really very short. It is left short for only one position at the moment because Hudson-Odoi is improving, Hudson-Odoi in one or two months will be at the same level as the other players. I hope the same for Ampadu. Of course playing as a central midfielder in our team is not easy, we need to try and try and try in training.”

Chelsea is more than just a football club to me; it's a passion I share, and my affinity with the Chelsea badge is one that will last forever. As far as watching my favourite team is concerned, I'd rather miss a meal than miss a Chelsea game.
