Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen missed a golden chance to equalise during Chelsea’s 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham at Wembley on Tuesday.

Following a Chelsea corner, the 22-year-old defender managed to escape the attentions of Toby Alderweireld and Dele Alli and found himself unmarked at the far post but his shot was way off target with just Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga to beat from close range.

Had he scored against Tottenham, the tie would have had a different reflection going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge in two weeks.

Christensen is yet to score in over 50 appearances for Chelsea and Chelsea legend Joe Cole has urged him to emulate former Chelsea defender William Gallas.

“This was the one, at the far post, you want that to fall to a forward player,” Cole said on Sky Sports.

“To Robbie [Keane, in the studio as well] that’s bread and butter coming in and tapping it in at the back post. An old Chelsea centre-half William Gallas, that was his home there coming in at the back post, he scored countless goals there and Christensen could do with having a look at that.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has slammed the decision to award Harry Kane a penalty against Chelsea despite the striker being offside moments before he was brought down by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

According to Sarri, from a reverse camera angle Kane was offside and has insisted that English referees do not how to use VAR correctly.

“A few minutes ago I watched the video from our camera. It was offside. Our camera was in line with Harry Kane,” Sarri said.

“Offside with the head, the knee. Offside. It was really important the linesman carried on running, he had a big impact on our defenders.

“I don’t think English referees are able to use the system. ‘If you are not sure with the system, you have to follow the ball and at the end of the action decide. ‘But he stopped it and didn’t follow the ball – for our defenders it was offside. I don’t know about the goalkeeper but sure the defenders.

“I think they have to study the system. It’s very strange in the Premier League there isn’t VAR and in Carabao Cup there is the system. ‘It’s very strange for us, the players and referees.”

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was also dissatisfied with the decision as he said: “The technology is still developing and we need to work together to try and be clear when we are going to use it.”
