Chelsea lost the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

A Harry Kane controversial penalty in the 25th minute was the only goal of the game as Spurs won the first leg, with a second meeting scheduled in a fortnight to determine who will reach the final, with a potential meeting with Manchester City in February.

Spurs were lucky to have won the game as Chelsea were the better side but couldn’t find a way past Paulo Gazzaniga despite dominating large spells of the game.

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante who had a good game and even hit the goalpost has assured that the team will get a better result in the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

“The penalty put us in difficulty, we tried to react but we couldn’t score a goal, and that’s why the result is like it is,” said Kante.

“We did a good game, we had a lot of the ball. The statistics show we could have had a better result, but it is what it is. We need to accept that.

“I think now we can get a better result at Stamford Bridge,’ added the midfielder, turning his attention to the second leg.

“We have more chance in front of our fans. We will need them. We have a match to get to the final and we will give our maximum to do it.”

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri said before the game that he wanted a determined performance from his players and not the kind that made Tottenham beat Chelsea 3-1 back in November. And Sarri admitted after the game that he was satisfied with his team’s performance but was disappointed with the scoreline.

Sarri said: “We deserved more because in this match we played better than the opponents.

“We were in control of the match and defended well against a team dangerous in the offensive phase, so we deserved more. We played about 70 balls in the opposition box against 11 balls of Tottenham in our box, 18 shots against seven I think, five goal opportunities against two, so we deserve more.

“So I am really disappointed with the result but very happy with the performance, one of the most important of the season from my team.”

Speaking of the second leg of the game, Sarri is expecting another difficult match but believes that the team can get the victory if they put this same level of performance.

He said: “Chelsea v Tottenham is a very difficult match and also for them, so it will not be easy to win at Stamford Bridge but after this performance, if we are able to play on the same level I think that we can do it.”

Chelsea is more than just a football club to me; it's a passion I share, and my affinity with the Chelsea badge is one that will last forever. As far as watching my favourite team is concerned, I'd rather miss a meal than miss a Chelsea game.
