In the summer transfer window that would commence the 2016/2107 season, Chelsea’s transfer business was at slow pace. Isuues sprung up and criticisms were aimed at the club for selling Serbian midfielder, Nemanja Matic to Manchester United, and Diego Costa’s damaged relationship with Antonio Conte was another talking point that swirled around the club and the Spaniard’s exile was threat to the club’s success.

Even the feat of winning the title the previous season couldn’t help then manager, Antonio Conte persuade the club to deliver his preferred targets. That summer saw the club hugely embarrassed as many players turn down moves to Chelsea. The likes of Oxlade Chamberlain and Romelu Lukaku preferred moves to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, than to Chelsea. More so, Danilo’s preference for the blue half of Manchester than the Royal blue of Chelsea was also a sucker-punch.

The final hit was on deadline day as then Everton player, Ross Barkley opted against a move to the club despite the fact Chelsea had agreed a fee with Everton in  the region of $44m. This was a slap on the club’s face, but the pain didn’t linger for long as the player eventually made the move to London in a cut-price deal earlier this year during the January winter transfer window for $19m. Yet, the player’s frustrations in a blue shirt continued as he struggled with form and fitness and rarely got game time under Conte.

But under Sarri’s watchful eyes this season, Barkley is firing on all cylinders and really looking like a real bargain deal for Chelsea. His performances have been superb and his goals supply and contribution has been phenomenal. Just maybe, the Barkley we have been waiting for has emerged from the shadows of mediocrity.

Let’s hope for the best. Cheers.
