Chelsea youngster Andreas Christensen has had a good start to the season after usurping David Luiz to take centre stage in Antonio Conte’s three-man backline.

The 21-year-old has been having a good season so far, and his absence has always led to a collapse in the Chelsea defence.

However, the young Dane has had some lapses in Chelsea’s last two games against Barcelona and Manchester United respectively.

In the game at Old Trafford on Sunday, Christensen couldn’t stay up after colliding with Romelu Lukaku which caused an opening for the Belgian to equalise before half-time. And he didn’t spot the run of Jesse Lingard who scored the winner for United.

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has told the 21-year-old to toughen up his game and also hailed him for his good qualities.

“Andreas Christensen is a gifted young player but he needs to toughen up,” he wrote in his column in The Times.

“He will learn from mistakes like the one made against Barcelona but yesterday he didn’t know whether to stay down or get up and defend for Romelu Lukaku’s equaliser.

“He was then caught ball-watching in the build-up to Jesse Lingard’s winner.

“When you factor in that Alvaro Morata has also shown he can be a soft touch up front, the spine of Antonio Conte’s team can be exploited.”
