Chelsea signed Marcos Alonso two years ago from Fiorentina for a fee of £24m, and the Spaniard has proven to be an astute signing.
The 27-year-old was instrumental in Chelsea’s title winning season under Antonio Conte as he was outstanding in the left wing-back position as Chelsea dominated the league that year.
Alonso is in his third year at the club, and no one expected that he will be a key player year after year as his signing for Chelsea was frowned at when he first made the switch from the Serie A.
He has also been effective for new boss Maurizio Sarri and is also finally being recognised for Spain.
Alonso still has two years left on his Chelsea contract, and the club are keen on extending his deal. Barcelona were rumoured to be interested in Alonso during the summer, but he has now assured that he will extend his contract at Stamford Bridge.
“I am very calm and very happy at Chelsea, and the club must also be happy with me because, although I still have two years left on my contract, they have offered me an extension,” said Alonso.
“We are talking about it and the talks to renew are already advanced. If everything goes well, I think I will renew before the end of this month – in the coming days.
“My father takes care of that [negotiations] as he is the one who leads the negotiations. I am 27-years-old, I still have two more years and I am going to extend my contract.
“What concerns me is to play as well as possible to win matches and titles with Chelsea and with the national team. I’m calm with my contract.”
