Many Chelsea fans expected to see a number of Chelsea youngsters on the pitch in the Europa League clash against PAOK, but Maurizio Sarri fielded a very strong side to face the Greece side.
Sarri made fives changes to the team that beat Cardiff City 4-1, and the players who were introduced were also strong senior players, with Andreas Christensen and Davide Zappacosta the only ones not to have featured this season.
Many Chelsea fans revealed their disappointment that Ethan Ampadu, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek didn’t feature in the game, and it was even more disappointing that Hudson-Odoi and Ampadu failed to make the bench.
In his post match press conference, Sarri was asked whether he will continue to select strong squads throughout the Europa League campaign.
He said: “I don’t know because for an English team the Europa League is a very difficult competition, because in Italy, if I play in Greece on Thursday I can ask to play on Monday night, but I have to play again in 63 hours, on Sunday morning. I don’t know in the future.
“It is not a big problem now because we have played only six matches but in the future it may be a problem. I hope to qualify before the last one or two matches of the group stage.”
