So many talented players have come through the youth system at Chelsea, but not many of them have been lucky enough to get a regular place at the senior team. The reason isn’t solely because they aren’t good enough, sometimes, it’s because there were better players.

We know the Chelsea’s system isn’t particularly popular for giving youth a chance, however, we must also admit that some of our Academy stars have been a flash in a pan.

Years ago, a certain Josh McEachran was supposed to replace Frank Lampard as one of the best midfielders in the world, but somehow, everything went downhill from there. We have also seen excitement surrounding players like Dominic Solanke, Lucas Piazon, Sam Hutchinson, to name a few, fizzle after a while, even though they had so much potential. So the club hasn’t always been to blame for the failures of some of our Academy products to move into the first team as regulars, it just wasn’t meant to be.

However, we have also lost a good number of players that are doing well elsewhere because of the coach’s lack of confidence in them. Nathaniel Chalobah and Nathan Ake are perfect examples of such players in recent times.

Another player that is doing well for himself, even under immense pressure is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The 22-year-old has wowed many since his Academy days. He did make it into Chelsea’s first team initially, but after a string of games, in an ultimately not-so-successful season, he was sent off on loan to Crystal Palace last term. But even away to a club where the play pattern is completely different, the Chelsea youngster has continued to impress. No wonder Gareth Southgate had to add him to his World Cup team, even ahead of other seemingly ‘more important’ players. And he has impressed in an even bigger stage. He has been the very rock behind the success of Southgate’s England side, even with no goal to his credit. He is a game influencer in the middle of the park, and exactly the kind of player we need at Chelsea.

Finding someone to partner Kanté in our midfield has been a conundrum lately. Bakayoko hasn’t proven a good gamble, and the club will be looking to get a replacement. I say we go for our man, get him back from Crystal Palace, and pair him with Kanté in midfield. Ruben isn’t like any of the Academy products I have seen in recent times; he has shown that he is ready for the senior team, and we need his services.

With Maurizio Sarri coming in, one cannot tell what would be his choice of players, but one thing is very certain; the world is watching. If we do not show some intent with Loftus-Cheek, it may not be long before we lose him to another rival like we did Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
