Chelsea legend Frank Lampard made 106 appearances for the England national team during his career, but the 39-year-old has revealed that he never enjoyed playing for the Three Lions in a new interview.

Lampard came under constant criticisms for not replicating his club form for England, and his midfield partnership with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard which never truly clicked added to the pressure.

Lampard has now admitted the constant pressure and backlash for poor performances made him not enjoy playing for his country.

“With England, it’s a different ball game,” he said.

“Going into friendlies, the World Cup [there is so much pressure].

“The media was harsh in 2006, in 2010 I don’t remember the fall-out so much but going into a press conference, it was like a war zone.

“You come out of it and that was as hard as the game because if you say the wrong word we’re all watching it.

“I didn’t really enjoy it.

“I enjoyed Euro 2004 but I was so focused and determined that when I knew I wasn’t playing so well, which I didn’t in World Cup, I got on myself.

“And then everything else comes into play.”

He added: “If everyone is honest, everyone who is in that England squad would say the same thing.”

Chelsea is more than just a football club to me; it's a passion I share, and my affinity with the Chelsea badge is one that will last forever. As far as watching my favourite team is concerned, I'd rather miss a meal than miss a Chelsea game.
