Chelsea have won three league games on the spin to revive hopes of finishing in the top four this season and a win against Liverpool on Sunday will put the Blues back in contention with two games to play.
But with Liverpool still in the Champions League and Arsenal still in the Europa League, a place in the Champions League isn’t assured even if Chelsea finish fourth.
If Liverpool win the Champions League (and finish the season in fifth place) and Arsenal beat Atletico Madrid in Thursday’s semi-final second leg and win the Europa League, Chelsea would miss out on Champions League football even if we finish fourth.
The winner of the Champions League and Europa League is guaranteed Champions League football for next season and since no more than five clubs from the same domestic league can play in the Champions League, the club finishing fourth would drop into the Europa League.
With Tottenham beating Watford 2-0 on Monday night, they are certain to end the season in 3rd place if they win their winning matches because they are just one point behind Liverpool and have played a game less.
It’s also mathematically possible for Liverpool to finish 5th if Chelsea win our remaining matches (including beating LIverpool on Sunday) and Liverpool drop points against Brighton on the final day. It’s not in our hands but it’s mathematically possible that Liverpool could finish 5th.
Liverpool have played 36 games and have 72 points, Tottenham have played 35 games and have 71 points while Chelsea (who have Liverpool to play on Sunday) have played 35 games and have 66 points.
