Marcos Alonso made a horror tackle on Southampton striker Shane Long in Saturday’s 3-2 win against the Saints.

The Chelsea wing-back escaped without punishment at St Mary’s after stamping on the back of Long’s leg, despite referee Mike Dean being just metres from the incident.

Alonso eventually provided the assist for Olivier Giroud’s first goal to start the comeback, and Millwall midfielder Tim Cahill has told Antonio Conte to caution Alonso for making such a tackle.

“There’s accountability for players but there’s also got to be accountability for referees,” he told Goal on Sunday.

“I understand they make mistakes, but this is a shocking challenge.

“It’s tough now, if they now make an example of this, then they’ve got to do it all the time, then what we’re going to have is replays on shows like this.

“If you see it again he (Dean) can clearly see it.

“That, for me, Alonso, he needs a swift talking to from his own manager not to do that again.

“That’s totally unnecessary, it’s out of character as well.

“If that happened to me, I would be looking for something, just an apology from the player and get on with it. That’s probably the type of player Longy is.”
