Chelsea left wing-back Marcos Alonso has been invited for national team duties with the Spain national team for the first time in his career.

The 26-year-old is happy with the call-up, with La Roja set for fixtures against Germany and Argentina.

“I was really excited,” Alonso said. “I was training and on my way to the locker room when my team-mates congratulated me, and I received loads of messages.

“My job was to do things well at Chelsea and focus on the team’s aims. This call-up is a surprise and a reward to the hard work these past years.

“What’s important now is that I’m here. I am focused on the friendlies and adapting to the team. I can’t wait to train and give my bit.”

Alonso will now join his father called Marcos Senior who played over 20 times for Spain in the 1980s, and his grandfather who’s a Barcelona legend also featured for the La Roja.

He said: “I take it as a chance. The head coach knows me well from the Castilla [Real Madrid’s reserves]. It’s a chance to show myself and adapt quickly to the team, in order for them to count on me more times.

“They’re two very important matches to prepare for what’s to come. They’re nice games, against the world champions and the runner-up, special for any player.”
