There were many star performers in Chelsea’s first Champions League game against Qarabag on our return to the competition but Davide Zappacosta, Chelsea’s deadline day signing from Torino stood out for his extra special display. Not only did he score a goal, he grabbed an assist, and showed he hasn’t come to fill the numbers at Chelsea.

His play was wonderful, and he crossed with purpose, although, I can’t really say I’m surprised. He first showed glimpses of his special qualities in the game against Leicester. He was only a late second half substitute, but I instantly knew he was a useful addition to the team.

Zappacosta’s arrival has brought a breath of fresh air to our squad, and adds more competition and fear to our attack. The signing of Zappacosta will bring healthy competition in our right wing-back position, which would be good for both Victor Moses and Davide Zappacosta.

Last season, Moses was Chelsea’s only right wing-back with Cesar Azpilicueta covering for him when he was injured or suspended. Moses seemed to tired out towards the end of last season because the wing-back role is a very demanding position. Zappacosta has shown he would be a good option in our right wing-back position and Antonio Conte would now be able to rest Moses to keep him fresh. Zappacosta’s performance against Qarabag also means Moses would have to push himself even further which is good for Chelsea.

Tuesday’s game might have been against lowly Qarabag, but it did show the importance of having extra quality in every area of play. On Sunday we’ll line up against Arsenal, I can only imagine how burned out some of our players would be if we didn’t rotate. Now, we’ll go into that game knowing we have fresh legs to field.

The season started off looking uncertain for us, but now we look better prepared to put up a very strong title challenge, thanks to brilliant arrivals like Davide Zappacosta.
