It’s the dawn of a new day for Chelsea Football Club as we make a return to arguably the biggest football competition in the world. Like the saying goes: ‘Absence makes you grow fonder’, the club must have felt heartache at missing out on last year’s edition after a disastrous ‘Mourinho season’ in the  2015/16 league campaign that saw us finish 10th.

However, a year’s stay in the football wilderness would certainly have fired up our desire and passion to go the extra mile in the competition or better still win it again after our success in 2012.

Here are 3 reasons Chelsea can be optimistic about winning it:

CHELSEA ARE AND HAVE BEEN THE BEST-PERFORMING ENGLISH CLUB IN THE EUROPEAN CLUB COMPETITIONS:

Chelsea’s history in the competition only dates from the 1999-2000 season. But while our achievements don’t compare to Europe’s elite clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, our achievements during this period certainly do. In 14 Champions League campaigns, Chelsea have triumphed once in 2012, have made five semifinals before being eliminated, two other quarterfinals and have only failed to make it out of the group stage on one occasion. Currently, we are the last English club to win the Champions League. So, there are chances that a repeat of Munich 2012 could also be on the cards.

FANTASTIC MANAGER, FANTASTIC PLAYERS:

Chelsea and Antonio Conte’s pedigree will be tested in the Champions League. Chelsea Italian manager certainly has more to prove after low points with Juventus. But his swagger and managerial savvy in recent seasons has seen his stock and that of the club rise in quick successions. Chelsea have a manager with a fine tactical silver lining and fantastic players that can challenge even Europe’s best to the crown.

NOBODY’S SPYING ON CHELSEA:

Our status as outside contenders and underdogs to win the trophy relieves the team of some pressure while also striving to make giant strides to win the competition. Just like in our 2012 triumph, nobody gave us a chance but good strings of performances and belief saw us go on memorable run to the finals. Certainly, this might just be another opportunity to win it again.

Let’s keep the blue flag flying high. Cheers!
