The summer transfer market slammed shut just two days ago and most Chelsea supporters are already feeling downbeat about the business done by the club. Six new signings were bought – Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Alvaro Morata, Tiemuo Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta. If we throw in young academy graduate, Andreas Christensen then it will be seven new players. We also have promising academy graduates, Kenedy and Charly Musonda and the presence of exiled striker, Diego Costa adds enough quality for the team.
However, the apparent snub and failed deals for Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ross Barkley was down to player insecurity over playing position and opportunities rather than appeal. Chelsea are a major force to be reckoned with and can still attract the best players in the world. The fans only need to support and put faith in club’s project to make Chelsea great again. Chelsea are now more of a self-sufficient club looking to get the right deals done than just splash the cash on expensive flops.
The signing of Caballero is as a replacement for Begovic, while Rudiger goes in for Terry, and Christensen replaces Ake. Bakayoko comes in for Matic, while Drinkwater is an upgrade on Chalobah. Morata should provide direct competition for Costa for the starting role while Batshuayi looks to stake a claim too. Kenedy provides cover for Alonso as Zappacosta does the same for Moses.
It’s been said that you don’t change so much from a winning team. Chelsea needed cover in vital positions rather than overhaul the team. So with these areas plugged with shrewd signings, all we can hope for is unprecedented success.
Let’s cheer on the team. Cheers!
