Willian failed to make the starting line-up for the game against Southampton despite impressing against Tottenham on Saturday and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has defended his decision to drop Willian and Pedro.

According to Conte, having options off the bench is the reason why he named Willian as a substitute along with Pedro.

“We have already played with those players in the starting eleven,” said Conte.

“I think Cesc is a player who can play in different positions.

“He has great personality and great quality in this part of the season. He is very important to us.

“On the bench Willian and Pedro give me an option during the game. It’s of fundamental importance now.”
