Chelsea’s Spanish left wing-back Marcos Alonso scored a brilliant free-kick as Chelsea defeated Bournemouth 3-1 at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

Before scoring the free-kick against Bournemouth, Alonso had hit the crossbar twice in his previous three free-kick attempts.

Inside the final 10 minutes against Crystal Palace before Christmas and with Chelsea leading 1-0 through a Diego Costa goal, Alonso hit the crossbar from a free-kick with Gary Cahill failing to connect with the rebound.

Alonso hit the crossbar yet again from a free-kick against Stoke City in March with the scores level at 1-1 before Chelsea went on to win the game 2-1.

In our 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge last weekend, Alonso worked the Crystal Palace keeper with another set-piece strike which was the first attempt on goal of the game.

Having hit the crossbar twice in his previous three attempts, Alonso was visibly excited to score a free-kick against Bournemouth which helped destroy any hope of a Bournemouth come-back.

“We talked about going for the third goal at half-time,” Alonso revealed.

“It was third time lucky [for me] after hitting the crossbar two other times.

“This time it went in and I’m very happy.”
