Italian legend Andrea Pirlo visited a Chelsea training session at Cobham this season and was also Roman Abramovich’s guest when Chelsea defeated West Brom 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in December.

Ex-Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins claimed during the week that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants Pirlo to replace Chelsea’s assistant manager Steve Holland, who will leave in the summer to join Gareth Southgate’s England set-up.

“I know for a fact he has been around Stamford Bridge on a number of occasions this year,” Wilkins told talkSPORT.

“He’s the one that Antonio Conte would like. He managed him at Juventus until he was 34.

“He is the one he will want to come in.”

However, Conte claims 37-year-old Pirlo wants to keep playing for his MLS side New York City. His contract runs until the end of this year.

“This is very strange because Andrea Pirlo is playing and wants to continue to play,” Conte said.

“I don’t know why someone would want to put this type of situation out there for me.

“It’s better for me to focus on the present, for me and my players.

“The present is more important than the future for all.

“I prefer to be focused on the present and try to finish this season, making this season a great season and not only a good season.”
