On Sunday, Chelsea confirmed that Nathan Ake has been recalled from his loan deal with Bournemouth, just 6 months after joining the Cherries.

There are so many reasons why recalling Ake makes perfect sense.

Chelsea are thin in defence and wing-back

Chelsea are thin at the back and at wing-back. We now play with three central halves, meaning we need at least two extra defenders as backups, and the only extra defender that’ll be reliable to call upon is Kurt Zouma. John Terry seems out of sorts in this formation, and Branislav Ivanovic has been a different player (far from his best) since last season.

Also, only Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso have been deployed in the wing-back positions in the league this season. Chelsea are thin in that position, and Conte is now trying out Pedro as a wing-back just to bring something extra. Nathan Ake can play in those positions, which makes it a very good decision to bring him back.

His versatility

Ake started out as a holding midfielder and can play in that position, and he can also play as a centre-back, a fullback and a wing-back, making him a very versatile player that’ll be useful to the squad. A player who can play in four positions is more than just a new signing for the club.

Ake has blossomed

Ake has blossomed into a very fine player. We’ve watched him grow from his fine performances in Watford that saw him win their young player of the year for last season, and he went on to Bournemouth and continued his development there. He had a good loan spell with Bournemouth and showed his qualities, even though he had to first fight for his shirt, and he grabbed his opportunity with continuous fine displays.

Ake has blossomed into a mature and confident all-round footballer, and it’s time for him to return home.
