Marcos Alonso has been Chelsea’s first choice left wingback since Antonio Conte’s switch to the 3-4-3 system.

The Spaniard has been solid in the role and was part of the team that went on a 13-game winning run but there’s this feeling among Chelsea fans that Alonso isn’t good enough for Chelsea.

A good wingback should be able to bomb forward with pace and should also be quick enough to recover when the team is defending and this is one attribute Alonso lacks in his game.

Against Peterborough on Sunday, Pedro played as a left wingback and he was outstanding as Chelsea won 4-1. Every one seems to want Pedro to replace Alonso as Chelsea’s left wingback but is this a move Conte should consider?

Pedro playing as a left wingback will certainly give Chelsea a spark in attack and with Eden Hazard in front of him, Chelsea will certainly torment opposition defences but Chelsea might also suffer defensively.

Hazard rarely comes back to support the defence so Chelsea need a left wingback who is sound defensively and that is a role Alonso has done well for Chelsea this season. Alonso isn’t brilliant going forward but his defensive qualities also help us stay solid since Hazard isn’t expected to join the defence when we don’t have the ball.

Playing Pedro as a left wingback increases our attacking potential while playing Alonso as left wingback would make us better defensively.

So would you prefer Pedro as a left wingback bombing forward and tormenting defences or would you prefer Alonso as a left wingback who is more conservative and helps make us solid at the back?
